Why I still print type specimens
Before I commit to a typeface I print it: a paragraph at reading size, a headline at full size, the numerals, and a few awkward words like 'minimum' and 'Wayfarer'.
On paper, problems show up immediately. Spacing that looked fine on a bright screen feels loose. A light weight that seemed elegant disappears under warm light.
The sheets go on the wall for a few days. The fonts that still feel right after I've walked past them twenty times are the ones that make it into the project.
